Sync, sharing and security

Sync, sharing and live editing

End-to-end encrypted sync across devices, sharing a note, editing together, and history.

Turning on sync

Sync is optional; without an account Jotzen sends nothing anywhere. To sync your vault across devices, open Settings → Sync and create an account with an email and a master password.

Sign in on another device with the same account to receive your notes. Linked folders are never synced; they belong to their own tools, such as Git.

What the service can and can’t see

Note text, names, paths, attachments and history are encrypted before they leave your device. The service stores ciphertext it cannot read. It does see your email address, how many notes and attachments there are, their sizes, when they change, and who shares which note. See the privacy page.

Sharing a note

Click the share icon in a synced note’s header to share it with another Jotzen account by email, as editor or viewer, or create an invite link. Remove someone or change their role there too.

Open a shared note at the same time as someone else to edit live: the header shows Live with a dot for each person, and their cursors appear with their names.

History

The right panel’s History lists who changed a synced note and when, for the last 30 days; open an entry to compare it with now and restore it. Notes that aren’t synced show Local history instead: the note as it was before each editing session, up to 50 versions, kept only on this computer.

Deleting your account

In Settings → Sync, Delete account removes everything your account owns on the service, its memberships and its sign-in. The notes on your devices stay where they are.
